Overview
The Foundry Training Center is modeled after Paul's training hub at the Hall of Tyrannus in Ephesus that equipped church planters to go out and establish new churches in the surrounding region. This center would be a space where church planters can come to receive training hands on training in first century principles, as outlined in NewBreed's training pathway (showed below).
Similar approaches have been successful throughout church history. John Wesley established an institution he called The Foundry in an old barn that trained circuit riders to spread the gospel. We desire to train church planters the same way Wesley trained circuit riders, hence the nickname for this training center: The Foundry.
Microchurch Incubator
The training center will act as a centralized resource center for microchurches (and potential traditional church plants) across the San Diego area. Whereas church planters are typically lacking in finances and manpower, especially in a microchurch context, the training center will be able to serve church planters and provide services that would be difficult to assume on their own. The center would be able to host events, make videos, and provide printing and graphic support, among other needs that rise up. Localized regional networks will be able to focus on reaching the lost without the headache of skilled or administrative distractions.
Besides the historic example that John Wesley provided, such an approach has been successful today. The Underground in Tampa, Kansas City, and other locations, Church Project in Houston, and Victory in Manila are just a few examples of a centralized support structure empowering local missionaries to plant churches across an entire region.
Bivocational Training
In the 1st century, church planters needed to be bivocational in order to support themselves while expanding the borders of the kingdom. Planters today are no different. There simply isn't enough money to fund kingdom expansion if bivocational planters aren’t capable of sustaining themselves financially while they work to penetrate the toughest areas with the gospel. The inability of church planters to make money has become a bottleneck for kingdom expansion, and is holding back the work of church planting.
NewBreed's training center is a solution to this problem by providing bivocational training in addition to services and traditional church planting equipping. As a hub, there is also significant benefit to creating a collaborative environment where church planters can learn from each other and local business leaders as they navigate bivocational experiments.
Business as Mission
Besides training church planters, the training center would also generate revenue by leasing one of its suites are renting space to local entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders as a co-working space. Some services, like video production, would be provided for a fee to help generate revenue and provide a model for what multiple streams of revenue could look like for a church planter.
Overall, the center is expected to be 4500 square feet, with approximately 1300 rented out to another business, 1100 for video production, and 2000 for church planter training, along with over 2000 square feet of outdoor patio space for events.
Prospective Location
Imagine.
- Coffee bar, roaster, and distributor: Generates business and community and would serve all of the other events and gatherings
- Charcuterie stand (and catering): Generates business and community and would serve all of the other events and gatherings
- Book shop and reading nook: Generates business and community and allows for discussion groups to meet in an intimate setting.
- Film and podcast studio: generates business and provides materials necessary for our training. It can also be used to train students from local schools.
- Table top gaming space: There are few places that serve the gaming community, therefore, this would keep people coming in the evenings.

The Plantology Pathway
NewBreed trains bivocational church planters through the Plantology Pathway. Just as Paul trained his teams, planters can learn to work with their hands, be trained, and minister at the same time through the Foundry. Below is the layout of how planters get trained.
